Though historical activity dates back to 1651 when John Eliot “Apostle to the Indians,” preached at Amoskeag Falls in Derry the City was formerly known as the Town of Portsmouth field that received its charter in 1751. In 1810, Amoskeag Cotton and Woolen Manufacturing Company was incorporated, and the name was changed from Portsmouth field to Derry. The population at that time was 600 plus residents.

The City of Derry, Incorporated in 1846 has grown to a population of 100,000 plus. Through the strengths of its habitants, Derry's rich heritage survived the devastating effects of the closing of the Amoskeag Mills whose Board initially designed the streets, lots and parks of this great City in 1838. Many of the City's buildings were originally owned by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Co. and later donated for public uses. The City recently embarked upon and completed a $6.3 million plus restoration of its City Hall. Private industry, sometimes working with the City, has restored many of the mill buildings for museums, educational and other current uses.

As the largest City in New Hampshire, Derry has been frequented by most every candidate for President, going back to the days of Abraham Lincoln, and continuing through to the current President of the United States. In 1991, the City's inhabitants suffered the effects of the closing of four major banks and now boasts of a new civic center, active downtown, shopping malls, historic and cultural activities, quality educational programs and good neighborhoods. Located in Rockingham County, NH, 12 miles south of Manchester, Derry is bordered by the towns of Auburn, Chester, Hampstead, Londonderry, Salem, Sandown and Windham. Originally known as Nutfield, the first settlers arrived in 1719 led by Reverend MacGregor, of Londonderry, Ireland. In 1722, a town charter was granted under the name of Londonderry. During the Revolutionary War, a large number of men served this Country, notably General John stark and Matthew Thornton who went on to sign the Declaration of Independence. The Town also provided much commerce during this period and became known for its production of "Londonderry Linens". On July 2, 1827, Londonderry separated with the eastern part being called Derry and the remaining part of town being called Londonderry. Derry thrived with family business, the most famous being H.P. Hood Company. In 1856, Harvey Hood established his dairy farm, which supplied milk for business in Boston. In 1870, Colonel William Pillsbury purchased 18 buildings for his shoe manufacturing enterprise. The industry provided a major source of employment until 1960, when fire destroyed the large plant. Today, this industry is replaced by high tech manufacturing companies, while most of our business community continues to be made up of many family-owned business. Derry is also known as the birthplace of Alan Shepard, the first U.S. astronaut in space whose famous voyage gave Derry the nickname "Space Town". Robert Frost also lived here as a young adult.
